Malacoplakia is a rare inflammatory disease first reported by Michaelis and Gutmann in 1902 and named by von Hansemann in 1903 from Greek malaco (soft) and plakia (plate). Stanton and Maxted (1981) reviewed 153 cases: bladder 40%, ureter 11%, renal parenchyma 16%, retroperitoneum 16%. It can also occur in genitalia, GI tract, skin, bone and mesenteric nodes; urinary malacoplakia often accompanies chronic E. coli bacteriuria.
Fever; bladder irritation signs; lumbar pain with renal percussion tenderness; hematuria
It is associated with chronic E. coli infection and macrophage lysosomal dysfunction.
