Orchitis is inflammatory lesion of the testis from various causes: nonspecific, viral, fungal, spirochetal, parasitic, traumatic. The testis itself rarely gets bacterial infection, with rich blood/lymph supply. Bacterial orchitis mostly follows adjacent epididymitis, so also epididymo-orchitis. Common pathogens: staph, strep, E. coli. Viruses can directly invade; mumps virus is commonest, mainly attacking childhood parotids but also the testis, so viral orchitis often follows mumps.
Collapse; parotid enlargement; varicocele; male lower abdominal pain; descended testis; nausea
