Intracranial epidural abscess is a collection of pus between the dura mater and the skull, usually from sinusitis/otitis/mastoiditis, skull osteomyelitis, or trauma/surgery. Clinical: fever, localized headache, ear/sinus symptoms, and sometimes neurologic deficits. Diagnosis: CT/MRI. Treatment: surgical drainage plus prolonged IV antibiotics and treatment of the underlying source (sinus/ear). Prognosis is generally good with prompt treatment.
Fever; localized headache; ear/sinus symptoms; history of sinusitis/otitis/trauma; may have neurologic deficits
Infection from adjacent sinus/ear/skull spreads epidurally, forming a pus collection limited by dural attachments.
Surgical drainage; prolonged IV antibiotics; treat sinus/ear source; manage complications
Treat sinusitis/otitis promptly; sterile trauma management.
It is recommended to visit the Neurosurgery department; an appointment can be booked on this platform before the visit.
