Cutaneous Meningioma

Cutaneous meningioma = psammoma; primary cutaneous meningioma = rudimentary meningocele. Developmental defect; head/forehead, rare external auditory canal; ectopic meningeal cells outside skull. Mostly benign; spherical/nodular; extra-axial, often embedded in hemisphere. Extremely vascular (ECA/ICA/vertebrobasilar supply). Slow-growing; may be asymptomatic even when large.

Frontal mass; nodule; calcification

Causes and Pathogenesis

(1) Etiology: biologic/chemical/physical stimuli → malignant transformation of normal/embryonic tissue. Radiation induces skin/lip/tongue/esophageal cancer; second tumors years after brain radiation (fibroblast/meningothelial oncogene mutation). Chemicals: anthracenes (methylcholanthrene/dibenzanthracene/benzopyrene), N-nitroso compounds. Viruses: adenovirus/SV40/sarcoma virus → animal intracranial tumors; insert into chromosomes. Embryonic remnants: craniopharyngioma/chordoma/teratoma/epidermoid/dermoid cysts. (2) Mechanism: not fully elucidated.

Surgery, drug, rehabilitation

Preventive Measures

Adequate sleep; avoid overwork; regular lifestyle; light diet; avoid spicy. Avoid carcinogenic foods (cinnamon); spicy (chili/pepper/ginger); fatty (lard/cream/tallow).
