Thymic cysts are benign lesions along the thymopharyngeal duct, usually in the anterior mediastinum/neck. Congenital (remnant of thymopharyngeal duct) or acquired (inflammatory/neoplastic-associated). Most are asymptomatic incidental mediastinal findings; large cysts may cause cough, chest pain, or compressive symptoms. Thymic malignancy must be excluded; resection for symptomatic or suspicious cysts.
Usually asymptomatic incidental mediastinal mass; cough; chest pain; compressive symptoms if large
Congenital thymopharyngeal-duct remnant or acquired inflammatory cyst forms a fluid-filled thymic lesion.
Observation for small asymptomatic; surgical resection for symptomatic/suspicious cysts
Imaging follow-up; exclude associated thymic tumor.
It is recommended to visit the Thoracic Surgery department; an appointment can be booked on this platform before the visit.
