The pathology of disease

Cervical-rib syndrome is a form of thoracic-outlet syndrome in which a cervical rib compresses the brachial plexus/subclavian vessels, causing arm pain/numbness, weakness, and vascular symptoms. Clinical: neck/shoulder/arm pain and numbness in the ulnar distribution, worse with arm elevation, with a palpable cervical rib. Treatment: physical therapy/posture, pain control; surgical rib resection for progressive neurologic/vascular compression.

Common Symptoms

Neck/shoulder/arm pain; ulnar-distribution numbness; arm elevation worsens; palpable cervical rib

Causes and Pathogenesis

Cervical rib/compression at the thoracic outlet irritates brachial plexus/subclavian vessels.

Treatment

Physical therapy/posture; pain control; surgical rib resection if neurologic/vascular compression progressive

Preventive Measures

Posture correction; avoid arm elevation; PT.
