The pathology of disease

Causalgia (complex regional pain syndrome type II) is severe burning pain, allodynia, autonomic (swelling/color/temperature changes) and trophic (skin/nail) changes that develop after a known peripheral-nerve injury, out of proportion to the inciting event. Treatment: early mobilization/physical therapy, pain medications (gabapentinoids), sympathetic blocks, and multidisciplinary pain care; early rehab improves outcome.

Common Symptoms

Severe burning pain; allodynia; swelling/color/temperature change; trophic skin/nail changes; after nerve injury

Causes and Pathogenesis

Peripheral-nerve injury triggers abnormal peripheral/central pain and autonomic sensitization.

Treatment

Early PT/mobilization; gabapentinoids; sympathetic blocks; multidisciplinary pain care

Preventive Measures

Early mobilization after nerve injury; pain care.
