Achilles tendinitis

骨外科

Common symptoms

足跟痛

The pathology of disease

Achilles tendinitis refers to inflammation of the Achilles tendon. Generally it is caused by excessive stress on the calf gastrocnemius and Achilles tendon during sports, such as playing basketball; in addition, suddenly increasing the intensity or frequency of exercise often causes it. It involves partial fiber edema, tearing, congestion, edema, fibrous degeneration and even calcification, with the heel unable to touch the ground and pain on dorsiflexion of the ankle.

Common Symptoms

Heel pain

Causes

Caused by excessive stress on the calf gastrocnemius and Achilles tendon during sports, such as playing basketball; in addition, suddenly increasing the intensity or frequency of exercise often causes it.

Treatment

Medication, supportive treatment, surgery

Prevention

Although it is impossible to completely prevent Achilles tendinitis, measures can be taken to reduce the risk: exercise gradually, increasing the amount and intensity of activity step by step. Avoid sports that put too much stress on the Achilles tendon, especially for too long; if you feel pain during an activity, stop immediately and rest. Wear well-fitting shoes that provide adequate ankle cushioning and a sturdy arch support to reduce stress on the Achilles tendon. Do stretching exercises daily, especially in the morning and before and after exercise, stretching the gastrocnemius and Achilles tendon to keep them strong; this is especially important to prevent recurrence. Do exercises that strengthen the gastrocnemius, such as toe raises, rising onto tiptoes then lowering slowly, which helps the Achilles tendon muscles bear greater load. 1. Warm up and stretch before exercise; if the muscles are tight or fatigued, the impact of exercise transmitted to the Achilles tendon can cause tendinitis. 2. Build strength: heavy-load calf exercise lets the Achilles tendon bear greater force; body conditioning: plyometric training improves the muscles, tendons and ligaments of the calf and ankle; stretching: calf stretches improve tendon flexibility; balance: do exercises to improve balance and body awareness. 3. Choose suitable shoes; if shoes are too large, the toes grip the sole, overusing the plantar fascia and related tissue, causing local tendon strain and tendinitis. 4. Increasing running distance too fast or overtraining adds impact to the Achilles tendon; increase gradually. 5. Too-hard running surfaces and shoes can trigger it; add an insole to the heel to reduce Achilles tension.
