Uterine rupture

Rupture of the uterine corpus or lower segment during pregnancy or labor is uterine rupture, mostly in labor, related to obstructed labor, improper operative delivery, misuse of uterotonics, trauma to the pregnant uterus and poor healing of uterine scars; a few occur in late pregnancy. It is one of the severest obstetric complications, often causing maternal and fetal death; its rate is an obstetric quality marker and has dropped with improved care.

Common Symptoms

Sudden abdominal pain, fetal distress, shock

Causes

Obstructed labor, scarred uterus, trauma, uterotonic misuse.

Treatment

Emergency laparotomy, repair/hysterectomy

Prevention

Proper obstetric care, screen scarred uterus.
