Amniotic fluid embolism is a serious intrapartum complication in which amniotic fluid suddenly enters the maternal circulation during delivery, causing acute pulmonary embolism, anaphylactic shock, DIC, renal failure, or sudden death. Incidence is 4/100,000-6/100,000. It is caused by particulate matter in contaminated fluid (fetal lanugo, squamous epithelium, vernix, meconium) and procoagulants entering maternal circulation; recent studies view it mainly as an anaphylactic reaction.
