Duct ectasia is a chronic breast disease with long course, complex and varied lesions, common in middle-aged/elderly women, peak age 50-60. Previously called varicocele-like swelling, plasma cell mastitis or comedo mastitis; Haagensen and Stout named it duct ectasia because plasma-cell infiltration is only a late inflammatory reaction, while duct dilation is the primary lesion.
