Hydrosalpinx

Hydrosalpinx is a common type of chronic salpingitis. After salpingitis, adhesive closure traps mucosal secretions in the lumen, or isthmic/fimbrial adhesion blocks the tube and forms pyosalpinx; when pus cells are absorbed, watery fluid remains. Sometimes the fluid is absorbed leaving an empty sac that appears as hydrosalpinx on imaging.

Common Symptoms

Female infertility; tubal adhesion; abdominal pain; rectouterine effusion; swollen tube

Causes

Unsafe sex, frequent intercourse or intercourse during menstruation causing salpingitis leading to hydrosalpinx; improper abortion and delivery also contribute.

Treatment

Antibiotics, laparoscopic drainage or surgery

Prevention

Safe sex, prompt treatment of salpingitis.
