Acute endometritis

Metritis is one of the pelvic genital inflammations, common in women. Inflammation may be localized or multi-site; the latter is common clinically. Acute inflammation may cause diffuse peritonitis, sepsis and even septic shock. Usually from poor menstrual hygiene, menses intercourse or promiscuity bringing pathogens into the uterine cavity. Mild infection shows congested, edematous endometrium with polymorphonuclear and round-cell infiltrate; severe infection causes suppuration, widespread necrosis and may reach the myometrium as acute myometritis.

Common Symptoms

Abdominal tenderness; lochia; weakness; station doctor; bloody discharge; lower abdominal pain; lumbar ache; chills; positive anti-endometrial antibody; reactive cells

Causes

Pathogens introduced into the uterine cavity by poor hygiene or intercourse.

Treatment

Antibiotics, drainage

Prevention

Menstrual hygiene, avoid infection.
