A Bartholin cyst is a retention/inflammatory cyst from obstruction of the Bartholin duct opening with continued gland secretion. Childbirth trauma to the vagina/perineum scars and blocks the duct opening; episiotomy repair may injure the duct trapping secretions; after acute inflammation/abscess resolves, pus absorbed to clear fluid also forms a cyst. It may secondarily infect into an abscess. Small cysts need no surgery, follow-up; large symptomatic or recurrent cysts need incision and drainage preserving gland function.
