Bartholinitis is inflammation of the Bartholin glands, located deep in the lower 1/3 of the labia majora, about 0.5-1.0 cm in diameter, the excretory duct about 1.5-2.0 cm opening near the hymen on the inner labium minus. On sexual stimulation they secrete lubricating mucus. Their anatomy lets pathogens invade. Pathogens are mainly staph, E. coli, strep and enterococcus; with rising STD rates, Neisseria gonorrhoeae and Chlamydia trachomatis are now commonest. Untreated, acute suppuration becomes a Bartholin abscess.
Vulvar swelling, pain, discharge
Pathogens invade via the duct opening; staph, E. coli, gonococcus, Chlamydia.
