Torsion of ovarian cyst pedicle

Ovarian cyst pedicle torsion means a too large/heavy cyst twists the ovarian proper ligament under external force or gravity; the vessels supplying the cyst twist, causing ischemia and even necrosis/rupture with severe abdominal pain. It is a gynecologic acute abdomen; about 10% of ovarian cysts torsion. Common in long-pedunculated, medium-sized, mobile tumors with the center of gravity to one side (cystic teratoma, mucinous and serous cystadenoma most often), on sudden posture change, early pregnancy or postpartum.

Common Symptoms

Palpable large abdominal mass; menstrual cycle change; abdominal pain

Causes

Long pedicle, mobile cyst with off-center weight twists on posture change.
