Any mass growing on the cervix, cervical canal or attached by a thin stalk to the uterine wall is clinically called a uterine polyp; an intrauterine polypoid mass may be a fibroid (submucosal pedunculated fibroid). Endometrial polyps are focal endometrial overgrowth, common, projecting into the cavity as smooth fleshy masses with varying stalk length; longer ones may protrude outside the external os. Small polyps are asymptomatic; those protruding outside the cervix may cause postcoital bleeding. Long-stalk polyps can be removed hysteroscopically.
