Amenorrhea is a common gynecologic symptom with many causes. It divides into primary and secondary. No period by age 18 is primary amenorrhea; after menarche, before normal menopause (excluding pregnancy/lactation), no period for over 6 months is secondary amenorrhea. The distinction is largely arbitrary because basic causes may be the same.
