Vaginismus is a psychophysiological sexual disorder, also called fear of intercourse. On anticipation or actual insertion of the penis or a substitute, the muscles around the outer 1/3 of the vagina (superficial/deep transverse perineal, levator ani, severe cases inner thigh adductors) spasm involuntarily, causing dyspareunia or inability to enter. It can occur in any sexually active woman: adolescent, reproductive, elderly. Types: primary, secondary, complete and situational.
