A narrative commentary on traditional Chinese medicine's molecular mechanisms during the ageing of t
Traditional Chinese medicine has a long history, gathering the wisdom of conventional medicine, and its rational use is beneficial for healthy nutrition. Skin aging involves complex innate and exogenous mechanisms that drive oxidative stress, cellular aging, DNA damage, and the destruction of extracellular tissue and intercellular mediums. This review summarizes the preclinical evidence for these pathways of TCM-derived botanical drugs and preparations.
We found 19 single-plant medicines and 17 preparation studies. The most frequently reported effects include activation of NRf2/ARE, reduction of oxidative stress (ROS) and MDA concentrations, increased SOD activity, suppression of matrix metalloproteinase, MMP activity, reduction of ageing markers [p16, p21, and senescence-associated β-galactosidase (SA-β Additional modulation pathways include MAPK/AP-1, PI3K/Akt/mTOR, TGF-β/Smad, and NAD+/Sirtuin, which contribute to the reduction of inflammation, enhanced antioxidant defense, and preservation of dermal collagen. These findings suggest that multi-path modulation is not a true pharmaceutical synergy.
This system-level approach emphasizes the shift from single therapies to all-environmental interventions.
