The eight-year study revealed differences in the aging scripts of different individuals.

Recently, there have been a number of recent developments in the field of international medical health that continue to attract the attention of the industry and the public. According to an eight-year study of 335 women, the trajectory of individual aging molecules is not only influenced by genetic factors, but also by factors such as circadian rhythms, seasonal, and environmental exposure. The authors of the paper said that understanding these individual variations on long-term trajectories would be important for future precise medical methods.

Multidisciplinary characteristics and comprehensive biological measurements of genes, metabolites, and other biological signals provide detailed molecular-level synthesis of individual physiological states and help in early detection of disease risk and precise interventions. However, this potential requires the ability to distinguish between normal molecular changes in aging and disease-related biological changes. Although researchers have mapped molecular changes associated with aging in known model organisms, similar long-term data in humans have not yet been found.

To fill this gap, Julia El-Sayed Moustafa and her colleagues created the Tomt study using data collected from a long-running twins UK team. The Tomt study followed 335 female twins for eight consecutive years, collecting full-blood gene expression and repeat measurement data on 1,197 serum metabolites. With this new longitudinal dataset, El-Sayed Moustafa et al.

studied which genes and metabolites change over time, how these changes differ across cell types, and how genes, seasonal cycles, time of day, and environmental pollutants (such as PFAS) affect molecular activity. They also explored how patterns of gene expression and metabolism are linked over a single time point and life cycle. According to their study, aging is accompanied by a wide but highly individualized physical molecular landscape change.

Over an average six-year cyclical period, more than 5,000 genes and 181 metabolites changed over time, including many that are closely related to age-related diseases such as cardiovascular disease and diseases of the nervous system. This suggests that people in the same age group can follow a significantly different biological ageing trajectory.
