A new anti-viral strain may prevent the outbreak of measles before the outbreak.

Recently, there have been several recent developments in the field of international medical health that continue to attract the attention of the industry and the public. Researchers at Georgia State University have developed an experimental oral antiviral to prevent the spread of a virus similar to measles through close contact and air transmission among carnivores such as grasshoppers. This treatment also reduces symptoms when given before or after any time of exposure.

The findings were published in the journal Nature and Microbiology of Crustaceans and come from the Georgia State University Center for Transnational Antivirus Research (CTAR). Their work focused on the canine fever virus, which produced a disease similar to measles in fox mice. Researchers tested the antiviral with a recently developed drug candidate, GHP-88310 (described in the Science Advances Paper).

The drug is a multi-polymerase of a wide-spectrum inhibitory virus that the virus needs to self-replicate. The team examined whether preventative use of the drug, i. e.

short-term use of the drug before or after exposure, could prevent the virus from spreading through direct contact or sharing airways. GHP-88310 has successfully blocked both forms of transmission. When drugs are used to treat infected animals, their infection time is shortened even if they are infected with the virus.

Rapid suppression of measles outbreaks is essential to regain control of the virus, said senior author, University of California, Regents Professor, CTAR Director, Richard Plemper. Since 2025, measles outbreaks have occurred again in several U. S.

states, resulting in thousands of infections, hundreds of hospitalizations and three confirmed deaths in several states. Large outbreaks involving multiple deaths have also occurred in Canada and Mexico, raising concerns about whether North America can maintain its measles elimination status. This finding demonstrates the remarkable antiviral activity of the drug in an unprecedented study of viral polymerase inhibitors.
